Choosing the right blood glucose meter:
5 questions to ask

Choosing the right blood glucose meter is an important first step in managing your diabetes. By testing how much glucose is in your blood throughout the day, you can make sound decisions about staying healthy.

For the most part, blood glucose meters all use the same technology. Choosing the right one really boils down to a matter of your personal preference. As you look for a meter, ask yourself these 5 questions:

1. “What sample size is required?”
Some meters require more blood than others. For instance, the OneTouch® Ultra® meter requires just a speck of blood. You can also test on your arm, which may be less painful than finger testing. Note that arm testing may not be as reliable as fingertip testing under certain conditions. Be sure to talk to your healthcare professional before you begin testing on your arm.

2. “What strip does it take?”
You’ll probably want to use a test strip that's big enough to handle and can be easily inserted into the meter. The Ascensia® BREEZE™ Glucose Meter features an easy-to-load disc that contains 10 individual test strips with no coding required.

3. “Is it easy to use?”
Newer models of blood-glucose monitors feature one-step sampling and readout. For example, the Hypoguard Advance Micro-draw™ Glucose Meter is ultra easy to use — just insert a test strip and the meter turns on for you!

4. “How advanced is it?”
The newer generation of meters requires smaller blood samples and provides some useful new features. For example, the MediSense Optium™ Glucose Meter allows for a smaller, less-painful sample on the forearm in addition to fingertip testing. Special features include a 450-test-result memory and the ability to download information to a personal computer (yours or your doctor’s).
5. Is it covered by Medicare?
This may be the most important question of all. And the good news is that if you are a Medicare beneficiary and have a doctor’s order to test your blood glucose, Medicare will cover the cost of your meter! Recognizing how important it is for people with diabetes to check their blood sugar throughout the day, Medicare covers these diabetes testing supplies:
  • Blood glucose monitors and batteries
  • Test strips
  • Lancets and lancing devices
  • Control solution
  • Hemoglobin A1c tests
